I have recently had a similar experience. There is a bug in the version of mondorestore that is installed in the ubuntu package. The ubuntu package is also rather old as the latest stable release is 2.2.4 and the ubuntu package is 2.2.2. If you download and install the 2.2.4 release from http://www.mondorescue.org/downloads.shtml you should be able to restore your data.
