It depends of ubuntu version? I installed latest 8.04 RC 2, because 7.10 showed black screen as well. 8.04 alternate PC (Intel x86) install/live DVD said that I have incompatible system! :-) But I am on Core 2 Duo.
May be I should use 7.10 alternate?
