Leaving a trail behind means that gnome-shell doesn't know it's meant to be painting any wallpaper. So that does sound related to monitor issues.
Just to make sure it's not caused by another bug we have in progress, please try: gnome-extensions disable [email protected] and log in again. Please also try *without* the HDMI monitor connected.
