Public bug reported: Binary package hint: debian-installer
Please note I have reproduced this on 7.04. If needed I can attempt to reproduce the bug on a newer version, but I haven't had the time and it should still be fixed on 7.04 anyway. I extracted the kernel and initrd from mini.iso to a usb pendrive and used syslinux to boot into debian-installer. Everything goes just fine, except for installing grub. It always installs to /dev/sda (which is the USB drive), then upon reboot, it fails to boot unless the usb stick is in the drive. I can install from the USB pendrive, and as long as I remove the pendrive as soon as I get to the "loading additional modules" stage, where it presumably downloads and modprobes various non-network drivers (i.e. disks!), my hard drive is /dev/sda and everything is 100% fine, because the drive ends up being the same after installation. If I leave the pendrive in during the module loading stage, the pendrive gets detected as /dev/sda, while the (sata) hard drive is detected as /dev/sdb causing badness down the road, because upon reboot, the actual kernel recognizes the hard disk as /dev/sda while the pendrive is either not present (I'm done installing) or it is /dev/sdb.
