OK, the EDID problem is too significant to not be a factor here. It
means the display is not connected properly or is faulty. So gnome-shell
can start up but it might treat the machine as having no display
connected. Although in theory it should just treat the display as
connected but low resolution.

Since you say you can see a cursor still, is that a text cursor or a
mouse cursor? If you can see a text cursor then likely it's started on
the wrong VT. So try:

1. Ctrl+Alt+F4
2. Ctrl+Alt+F2
