OK, the EDID problem is too significant to not be a factor here. It means the display is not connected properly or is faulty. So gnome-shell can start up but it might treat the machine as having no display connected. Although in theory it should just treat the display as connected but low resolution.
Since you say you can see a cursor still, is that a text cursor or a mouse cursor? If you can see a text cursor then likely it's started on the wrong VT. So try: 1. Ctrl+Alt+F4 2. Ctrl+Alt+F2 Here is the log of the EDID problem: Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: NET: Registered PF_QIPCRTR protocol family Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2083772 Title: System gets blank/black screen after login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/2083772/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
