I think it changed very recently. I was doing manual partition installs on the old Acer reasonably often without problems. My guess is that it was at some point during the last three days or so prior to release. I don't have any old ISOs, so I can't go back and check.
I see that the Lubuntu people are not ruling a point release on account of Calamares issues.
