Without information from your syslog I can't tell more at the moment. Maybe you should try out a current live-cd, too. If there everything works, you should find out which program or configuration causes your broken X. You can fetch a current one from cdimage.ubuntu.com, located in the daily-live section (either torrent or iso download).
