debian merged https://salsa.debian.org/mutt-team/mutt/-/merge_requests/7
to enable autocrypt in mutt by default.

by the time new sources (mutt 2.2.14) are uploaded and/or a new release
is built, this will take effect and ubuntu inherit at least for 25.10
'questing' on next import.

tangentially, on neomutt: it had autocrypt enabled for long in debian/ubuntu,
but a regression fixed with version 20250404 made it not work for a time period
(atm released up to debian stable backports and ubuntu 'questing').

I was curious where other major distributions (fedora/arch) stand with their
mutts to exchange autocrypted mail with each other:

it's only for fedora that has *not* autocrypt enabled yet in mutt. It has for
neomutt.
Arch has it for both mutts.

PS: if you use autocrypt, it's best to point $autocrypt_dir to a
separate pgp folder and treat them ephemerally, as in: save mail locally
in cleartext or backup old keys to read old mail.
