I've forwarded the issue to Debian.

I also found what looks like some relevant changes in the upstream
project but it's in C rather than python, and the version number differs
from what Debian carries so that may be just inspirational rather than a
usable change.  But hopefully it gives some strong clues.  See the
linked debian bug for that.
