I am unable to duplicate this issue with the information you have provided on Ubuntu Desktop 24.10.
I did notice that your screenshot does not look like what the login screen on Ubuntu Desktop 24.10 looks like by default. See my attached screenshot. Please describe the specific layout of your external drive. Does it contain a lot of files? What filesystem is it using? Is the computer port USB 2.0, 3.0 or something else? Is it USB-A or USB-C? Alternatively, you might want to upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 since it includes a newer version of nautilus and many other dependencies.
