** Description changed: I am having issues with the NVIDIA 570 drivers rendering my system completely unusable on Ubuntu 25.04/Kubuntu 25.04. On a clean install of Ubuntu 25.04 / Kubuntu 25.04 (I tried this on both distros), when I use the nouveau drivers, I am able to boot into my desktop environment with no issues. Before this, on my old system using Ubuntu 24.04 and version 535 of the NVIDIA drivers + CUDA 12.0 toolkit, there was no issue. However, after using ubuntu-drivers to install nvidia-driver-570-open on the current system (which is the "recommended" driver), upon reboot my computer will go immediately from boot splash screen to a black screen where it freezes. I am not able to switch to TTY with CTRL+F2/F3/etc and from this point, the only way that I am able to access my system at all after this point is via a chroot environment with a LiveUSB. As far as hardware I am using ASUS WRX90E-SAGE motherboard (with latest v0914 BIOS), AMD TR Pro 7965WX CPU, and dual NVIDIA RTX 4090s (see attached lspci.txt for full hardware profile). I have tried this install process both with and without UEFI Secure Boot enabled, with the same result. (Currently UEFI secure boot is disabled on my system) I have tried setting various kernel commands such as nvidia- drm.modeset=1, nvidia-drm.fbdev=1, etc and that does not fix the issue. I have tried a variety of different install methods, ranging from ubuntu-drivers, to manually installing the packages directly (e.g. apt install nvidia-driver-570-open), to using the official NVIDIA install process with their third party repos (which use driver version 575, which has same bug). Unfortunately, the 535 version of the driver is no - longer available via ubuntu-drivers (it only has the server version). + longer available via ubuntu-drivers (it only has the server version), + and if I try to manually install 535 driver via apt, it wants to pull in + 570 libraries as dependencies. This driver appears to be causing similar issues for several people both on Ubuntu and derivatives such as Mint: * "25.04 boots up to a black screen, both built-in and external monitors" -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2107684 * "Black screen with Nvidia 570 open kernel drivers" - https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=446163 * "Ubuntu 24.04.2 AMD threadripper Blank Screen While Install with Nvidia RTX 5090 Zotac" - https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/ubuntu-24-04-2-amd-threadripper-blank-screen-while-install-with-nvidia-rtx-5090-zotac/326242/14 (this article is about RTX 5090, but it's the same motherboard/GPU family and NVIDIA driver and resulting in same issue) I am at a loss for what to do. This is quite a time consuming bug to address because every time I try something new and reboot, the only way I can get back into my system is to spend several minutes booting back into a live USB, creating a chroot environment, and using timeshift to revert back to the pre-NVIDIA driver state. I am happy to provide any information that you all think would be helpful, and I can boot into the chroot environment while it's broken to generate any helpful reports from there.
