Quick update: The laptop ran about a week before freezes started again. This time I took out the battery, and it then started to run noticeably smoother and peppier, including video. Almost felt like a new laptop, or like getting a new lease on an old one.
I assume a dead battery was adding to thermal issues and possibly interfering with maintaining a constant voltage and or even introducing voltage variability itself. That aside, I don't notice the fan kick up as i used to, so I imagine I might have to have the thermal paste replaced, because sensors might not be getting accurate readings, which in turn explains why the fan might not be as eager to spin up as years prior. This, with prior mentioned variables, ultimately could be exasperating freezes, in a sort of unplanned stress test. Hibernation works fine with the amdgpu driver, at least now after taking out the battery. So workaround: 1. use amdgpu driver 2. remove fried battery, perhaps replace it down the road 3. replace thermal paste before summer hits -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2113479 Title: [amdgpu] Video playback freezes Wayland & Xorg To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2113479/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
