Same situation....my HP Elitebook 840 gy suddenly started doing this with no idea as to what the trigger is except for the system resuming from suspend. I tried keeping sudo dmesg -w as no logs are written to the drive after it becomes read only, but couldn't catch anything noteworthy because of error messages filling the screen. The only thing I found that was different was "Aborting journal" and then the system goes haywire until I forcefully restart the system. Also tried doing smartctl and fsck but no errors came up. Don't know what to do except hope this is a kernel or system package issue.
