This was still annoying me so I have come up with the most rediculous
solution.

I have an Ubuntu 20.04 install acting as a hypervisor, running my actual
Ubuntu install under qemu.

The "hypervisor" install doesn't cause issues with the USB Ethernet, so
my actual install can be upgraded to 22.04 and 24.04 without issue.

That essentially "solves" the issue for me. Probably I'll just keep the
system like this until I replace the hardware.
