This happens only when you go through keyboard detection.  I answer its
questions with 'n', 'w', 'z', and then answer No for the rest of them.

I will attach logs of running `ps faux` and strace on various processes.
It looks like `dpkg-preconfigure --apt` is hanging.

** Description changed:

  Booting off the 20060927.7 alternate AMD64 installation CD, I am unable
  to get past the "Select and install software" step.
  
  It gets to 2% of the progress bar and the status reads "Retrieving file
  800 of 800".
