which likely describes the root cause of the issue:

another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?
Can you check if there's another instance of mysql running using "sudo netstat
-nlp | grep :3306"? Or maybe it might be the maintainerscript restarting mysql
and the timeout being too small for it to confirm the authentication plugin.
