Public bug reported:

When trying to reproduce the git FTBFS (bug 2119506), the OOM killer
reaped the buidl (along with the entire terminal?!).

According to the system logs, the culprit was `tr`:

août 05 11:55:40 dresden kernel:
oom-kill:constraint=CONSTRAINT_NONE,nodemask=(null),cpuset=init.scope,mems_allowed=0,global_oom,task_memcg=/user.slice/user-1000.slice/[email protected]/app.slice/app-gnome-alacritty-44283.scope,task=tr,pid=649033,uid=1009>
août 05 11:55:40 dresden kernel: Out of memory: Killed process 649033 (tr)
total-vm:33569836kB, anon-rss:20785664kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:0kB,
UID:100999 pgtables:53744kB oom_score_adj:200

`tr` doesn't seem like it should be eating that much memory?

** Affects: rust-coreutils (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
