I have also come to the same conclusion as Yury. I booted into `6.14.0-28-generic` which was still on my machine and now everything magically works fine. Similarly I also had the same error occur before the kernel upgrade.
Here is the apt log of day the upgrade broke the system: Start-Date: 2025-08-20 08:20:11 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Install: linux-objects-nvidia-575-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-image-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1 , automatic), linux-signatures-nvidia-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-modules-nvidia-575-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.1 4.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-modules-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic) Upgrade: linux-modules-nvidia-575-generic-hwe-24.04:amd64 (6.14.0-27.27~24.04.1, 6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1) Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) End-Date: 2025-08-20 08:20:21 Here is the log for the following day: Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:31:07 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Remove: linux-signatures-nvidia-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3+1), linux-image-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3), linux-modules-nvidia-575-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3+1) Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:31:13 Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:31:17 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Install: linux-modules-extra-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-tools-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-hwe-6.14-headers-6.14.0-28:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-headers-6.14.0-28-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic), linux-hwe-6.14-tools-6.14.0-28:amd64 (6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1, automatic) Upgrade: linux-headers-generic-hwe-24.04:amd64 (6.14.0-27.27~24.04.1, 6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1), linux-generic-hwe-24.04:amd64 (6.14.0-27.27~24.04.1, 6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1), linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04:amd64 (6.14.0-27.27~24.04.1, 6.14.0-28.28~24.04.1) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:31:41 Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:31:45 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Upgrade: linux-tools-common:amd64 (6.8.0-71.71, 6.8.0-78.78), linux-libc-dev:amd64 (6.8.0-71.71, 6.8.0-78.78) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:31:47 Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:02 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Remove: linux-modules-extra-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3), linux-modules-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:03 Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:07 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Remove: linux-headers-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:07 Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:10 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Remove: linux-objects-nvidia-575-6.14.0-24-generic:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3+1) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:11 Start-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:14 Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade Remove: linux-hwe-6.14-headers-6.14.0-24:amd64 (6.14.0-24.24~24.04.3) End-Date: 2025-08-21 08:32:15 I did not boot into `6.14.0-28-generic` on 2025-08-21 but I did so today (2025-08-22) with nothing in the history for today. As opposed to Yury, I did not remove `6.14.0-28-generic` and then install it. I have kept it on the machine and not touched it. Just continued working in `6.14.0-27-generic` I also looked in my "/var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades- dpkg.log" and I found the exact same log as Yury so I will not include it here. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2121046 Title: 6.14.0-28-generic kernel update broke network and touchpad To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-hwe-6.14/+bug/2121046/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
