Public bug reported:

In the last two kernel updates, 6.8.0-79-generic and 6.8.0-72-generic,
when logging in, Wayland sessions seem to hang and dump to a black
screen.

Temporary fix to the issue was editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to pass
WaylandEnable=false
