Just as a postscript on this if you do upgrade the kernel:

I noticed a couple of weeks later that my usb devices had disappeared. It took
me quite a long time to work out
that the udev files

/etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules
/etc/udev/rules.d/20-names.rules

have changed with respect to usb between gutsy and hardy **I think** because of
changes in usb in the new kernel.
When I updated these usb started working again although usb scanners still have
a permissions problem but this is a hardy bug
(seperate bug report).
