Well, that turns out to be because I already had another copy of Sound Recorder running (oops). So a more helpful error message in this case would be "You have another copy of Sound Recorder running." :-) (Or better, yet, just tell the existing copy to open a new window, and return immediately -- many applications behave this way now.) -- "Your audio capture settings are invalid.
