That certainly describes a common issue I see with our Nvidia drivers - upgrades don't always go smoothly.
For me the solution is usually something like this: 1. sudo apt purge '*nvidia*-5*' 2. Reboot. 3. Use the 'Additional Drivers' app to select a new driver. 4.
