Alright, so, here's an unordered dump of thoughts:

1/ there was no code change anywhere near the ELF parsing in glibc between the 
version in the release pocket and the current candidate.
2/ Heinrich's diagnostic is a likely explanation, but it also could be an 
off-by-one read (riscv allows unaligned reads, right?)
3/ Can our QEMU do big-endian riscv? I heard it's a thing...
4/ This is going to be fun to debug...
