dd is definitely implicated. My curioisity was whether it's producing extra output which is included when calculating md5sum, or whether it's actually extracting wrong. Tested that by setting the common makeself environment variable SETUP_NOCHECK=1 - now it takes an error extracting: "Extraction failed. Signal caught, cleaning up".
