Public bug reported:

Summary:
On the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 Notebook PC, the keyboard backlight is not
exposed under /sys/class/leds/. The hp-wmi module loads successfully, but no
hp::kbd_backlight device appears.

System Information
Manufacturer: HP
Product Name: HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 Notebook PC
Version: SBKPFV3
BIOS Version: S93 Ver. 01.22.00
BIOS Release Date: 07/03/2025

Kernel & OS
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (up-to-date)
Kernel: 6.14.0-29-generic

Steps to Reproduce

Boot into Ubuntu.

Run ls /sys/class/leds/

Only capslock, numlock, scrolllock, and phy0-led appear.

No hp::kbd_backlight.

Load the driver manually:

sudo modprobe hp-wmi
ls /sys/class/leds/

Same result (no backlight LED device).

Observed Behavior

hp_wmi module loads correctly (lsmod confirms).

/sys/class/leds/ does not expose hp::kbd_backlight.

Keyboard backlight toggle (Fn+F4) has no effect in Ubuntu.

Expected Behavior

hp::kbd_backlight should appear under /sys/class/leds/ when hp-wmi is
loaded.

Keyboard backlight should be controllable (values 0–2).

Additional Information
$ lsmod | grep hp
hp_wmi                 36864  0
platform_profile       20480  1 hp_wmi
sparse_keymap          12288  2 hp_wmi,intel_hid
wmi                    28672  4 hp_wmi,video,intel_wmi_thunderbolt,wmi_bmof

$ ls /sys/class/leds/
input4::capslock
input4::numlock
input4::scrolllock
phy0-led

Analysis

The issue appears to be that the DMI string for this model:

"HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 Notebook PC"

is not currently recognized by the hp-wmi driver.
Adding this model to the hp_wmi_dmi_table should allow the driver to expose the
keyboard backlight device.

Suggested Fix

Patch drivers/platform/x86/hp-wmi.c to include:

{
    .ident = "HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 Notebook PC",
    .matches = {
        DMI_MATCH(DMI_SYS_VENDOR, "HP"),
        DMI_MATCH(DMI_PRODUCT_NAME, "HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 Notebook PC"),
    },
},
