Ubuntu considers unsupported Nvidia legacy drivers as a security risk.
The 340 driver was purposefully removed from Ubuntu - bug 2048087
They are not bringing it back.
There are other distros that keep Nvidia legacy drivers alive as long as
they can. For example, I'm running Debian sid/unstable and the 340
driver is available.
