Public bug reported:

The following updated packaged were offered:

gdm3 gir1.2-gdm-1.0 libgdm1

Upon installing these updates and rebooting, the Desktop could not be
reached. Black screen only.

Subsequent restarts were not successful.

Shutting down works when triggered from Oracle VirtualBox v7.1.12.

Accessed Ubuntu's Recovery Console and removed the Automatic Login
entries from/etc/gdm3/custom.conf and rebooted.

Was able to reach the login screen and once logged in, was able to reach
the Desktop. This was repeated several times without any issues.

Conclusion is that Automatic Login with gdm3 amd64 46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.3
is broken. In this case, disabling Automatic Login (Settings: System:
Users) fixed the issue.
