Public bug reported:
After updating Linux Mint 21.3 (based on Ubuntu 22.04) from kernel
6.8.0-38-generic to 6.8.0-85-generic, the internal microphone stopped
working.
The audio device is detected (HD-Audio Generic, codec ALC256), and both Capture
and Internal Mic controls are visible and unmuted in amixer.
However, no sound is recorded in arecord or seen in PulseAudio/PipeWire input
levels.
Works on 6.8.0-38-generic
Broken on 6.8.0-85-generic
I've attached ALSA diagnostic files generated with the `alsa-info` tool.
**How they were collected:**
- `alsa-info-working.txt` → captured while running kernel **6.8.0-38-generic**
(internal microphone working)
- `alsa-info-broken.txt` → captured while running kernel **6.8.0-85-generic**
(internal microphone not working)
Both files were generated using:
sudo alsa-info --no-upload --output ~/alsa-info-<state>.txt
Since Launchpad doesn't let me upload two files, I merged them into one.
**Hardware details:**
System: ASUS VivoBook X515DAP (M515DA)
Codec: Realtek ALC256
Audio driver: snd_hda_intel / snd_hda_codec_realtek
**Summary of the issue:**
After updating from kernel 6.8.0-38 to 6.8.0-85, the internal microphone
stopped recording audio.
The device appears in `arecord --list-devices` and in PipeWire, but no signal
is captured.
All mixer controls (`Capture`, `Internal Mic`, `Mic Boost`) are enabled and
unmuted.
Booting back into 6.8.0-38 restores full microphone functionality.
**Model quirks tested (no effect):**
model=asus-zenbook
model=asus-mic
model=alc256-asus
Please compare the two ALSA info logs — likely a pin configuration or
initialization change in `snd_hda_codec_realtek` for ALC256 between
these kernels.
** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
** Attachment added: "alsa-info.txt"
