To add persistent flags to Chromim, one can use

  echo 'CHROMIUM_FLAGS=--disable-gpu' >> $HOME/.chromium-browser.init

Using Chromium from the edge channel may also prove beneficial, as it
has newer Mesa which will probably allow not relinquishing hardware
acceleration.
