I can think of two possible reasons for this:
1. The apps were originally opened on the external monitor and so they
would remember their original preferred positions unless they had been
moved manually.
2. The external monitor is positioned to the left of the laptop screen
and the window positions are being remembered in global coordinates.
Please check if either of those match your setup.
