Many thanks for the pointers. They've enabled me to narrow things down.
So it seems the problem is not with autofs after all; it is actually a
problem with Thunar. There was a Thunar process running with the
--daemon argument and it appears that once you have browsed to the share
in the Thunar UI, if the daemon is running it will keep the nfs share
mounted.

I've updated the affected package of this report to reflect this
