Public bug reported:
I’d like to ask if Ubuntu could enable BBR2 in the LTS kernels. BBR2 has
been in mainline since 5.18 and is stable. It’s basically an improved
version of BBR v1 — it handles congestion more fairly and works better
on lossy or high‑latency links.
Right now the Ubuntu LTS kernels (like 5.15 in 22.04 and 6.8 in 24.04)
ship with BBR v1 but not BBR2. That means anyone who wants to try it has
to compile their own kernel or install unsupported builds. If
CONFIG_TCP_CONG_BBR2 was enabled (either built‑in or as a module), it
would just show up in tcp_available_congestion_control and people could
switch to it if they want.
This wouldn’t change the default (CUBIC would still be the default), it
would just give users the option to use BBR2 without extra work. Since
Ubuntu kernels are used downstream in Mint, Pop!_OS, and others, turning
it on would help a lot of people.
