The usplash.conf fix worked wonders on my Toshiba Satellite 1900-101
notebook with Kubuntu Gutsy where the splashscreen was not visible and
bootup was a 4 minute crawl. In usplash.conf the set resolution was
1280x1024 while the notebook's native resolution is 1024x768.
Maybe updating the initrd fs is not even necessary because I could
already see the shutdown splash screen as soon as I had edited
usplash.conf and restarted.
I think the bootsplash resolution should default to something (nearly)
every screen can reproduce - like 640x480.
