I don't think this is a bug in showtime at the moment, the issue is
reproducible with gst-play-1.0 for example. It requires the application
to use playbin3, so Totem is not affected (although the handling of
subtitles in playbin2, which Totem uses, is also subpar)

I don't have a workaround for playbin3 yet, in the meantime I recommend
using mpv.
