Debian latest version is 550.

Ubuntu problem is that newer nvidia-settings from Debian depends on
nvidia-installer-cleanup package that conflicts with nvidia-driver-
binary from Ubuntu's xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-xxx. This one is a
dependency of nvidia-driver-XXX-open.

As support for xorg sessions is gone for GNOME desktop, IMHO, the best
way to solve this is to make xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-xxx packages
standalone for use only of people using a non GNOME desktop, not
depending on nvidia-driver-XXX-open at all.

This not only avoid the install of useless xorg files (in GNOME desktop)
but also make nvidia-settings updatable again.
