Thanks for this bug report. I tried to reproduce the problem, following your instructions and I was not able to reproduce it, Pidgin 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4.1 does reconnect without any problem. Can you install the latest pidgin version in Linux ubuntu Gutsy and tells if the issue still persist? You can specify your pidgin version by typing "apt-cache policy pidgin" ( without the quotes " ) in a terminal. Thanks for your contribution!
