Public bug reported:
Summary:
On Ubuntu 25.10 with GNOME Remote Desktop (RDP “Remote Login” mode), the
“Primary button” / left-handed mouse setting is stored correctly in gsettings
but does not affect actual mouse behavior when connected via RDP from Windows.
Environment:
Ubuntu 25.10 (daily / development build)
GNOME version: GNOME Shell 49.0
Session: Wayland
Remote access: GNOME Remote Desktop, system RDP enabled via grdctl
--system rdp ...
Client: Windows 11 Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe)
Client mouse: left-handed (primary button swapped in Windows)
Steps to reproduce:
On Ubuntu, open Settings → Mouse & Touchpad.
Toggle Primary button between Left and Right.
From a terminal, run:
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed
(the value correctly changes between false and true).
Connect from Windows using Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) to the Ubuntu
machine in Remote Login mode.
In the GNOME session reached via RDP, try left and right mouse buttons.
Expected behavior:
When org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed is true, the
primary/secondary buttons should be swapped for the RDP pointer (right
button acts as primary).
Actual behavior:
Regardless of the setting (true or false), mouse buttons behave as if
the setting is false (right-handed). The setting is essentially ignored
via RDP.
The GNOME Settings UI and gsettings both show the left-handed setting
being applied, but the pointer behavior in the RDP session never
changes.
Notes:
This seems specific to GNOME Remote Desktop / RDP input. I have verified
that behavior is correctly swapped when sitting at the physical console
with a plugged-in physical mouse.
Similar historical bugs existed where
org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed toggled correctly but
didn’t affect libinput/button mapping.
If needed, I can provide:
libinput list-devices
sudo libinput debug-events output
logs from journalctl -b around gnome-remote-desktop
Thank you,
Joel
