Having been poking at this in the background for a while I have some new
information.
Interestingly what tool chain is used to build the kernel appears to
affect the outcome, so this could either be a tool chain bug, or a
lingering kernel bug that has been masked by older versions of the tool
chain.
Added a task for gcc-15 to raise awareness and perhaps get some input
from the tool chain experts.
