Public bug reported:
As of less than one week ago, I have begun having serious crashing
issues on my Kubuntu 25.10 gaming system. I have been on Kubuntu 25.10
for probably around 20 days or so now, but recently I had 3 or 4 Mesa
updates, some of which said "refresh", others of which seemed to be new
versions. The crashing, I have found, is confined to focus loss. THE
FINALS is my control group, as without fail, if I am in a "match" (the
mouse is locked to the middle of the screen to control the view), when
tabbing out, the entire game will hang for a second or two, and then
crash immediately. Rarely, but on occasion, this will also freeze either
my whole system, or my current Wayland session, I have yet to test if
switching to another TTY is still possible or not.
Through talks with Google Gemini, I have come to the conclusion that
this is an issue presented by a change made to Mesa in 25.2 (I
believe?), changing how returning mouse control to the system as opposed
to the game is buggy. I have no idea if there is truth to this, but I
can confirm that crashing is consistent, ESPECIALLY with unreal engine 5
games, but they are only guaranteed if the game has control over my
mouse, and tabbing out would return that control to my system. As
previously mentioned, this is incredibly prominent in THE FINALS, but I
have also noticed it on Overwatch 2, however it is SIGNIFICANTLY less
likely to occur.
Obviously, crashing is not intended behavior in this case, and I have
not found a workaround yet. All games I have tried are run on Steam
through Proton, and I have tried 5 or 6 different Proton versions to no
avail.
I believe the "technical" name of the package that is giving me grief is
"mesa-vulkan-drivers", for reference.
I am on Kubuntu 25.10, Kernel 6.17.0-6-generic, using Wayland with
Plasma 6.4.5. I am on a Ryzen 5700x, 32GB DDR4@3200MHz, with a Radeon
RX7800 XT GPU.
