Public bug reported:
This appears to be a new bug that has started occuring only recently.
Daily driver (used every day) Dell M6700 laptop on docking station with
external monitor & keyboard. (I run it with laptop lid open due to
another Ubuntu problem with incorrect external monitor sync rate).
I normally shutdown Ubuntu via mouse using the Ubuntu desktops upper
right status panel power off button.
In a normal shutdown, the desktop display process closes down resulting
in both screens (laptop and external monitor) going black, shortly
followed by the laptop turning itself off.
In this fault, the Ubuntu OS just completely hangs (Ubuntu desktop
visible, mouse pointer frozen), requiring a hard power off of the
laptop. This has happened twice.
Two other occasions of this fault, the screens have gone dark but the laptop
never powers off. I powered off one of my USB sticks that I happened to have
plugged in at the time and this resulted in a few linux log entries being
listed on the laptop display. In the end I had to hard power off the laptop.
(Next time this situation occurs I will try and take a photo of the log
entries).
In total this power off fault has happened 4 times in all, and has not
occurred prior to a few weeks ago.
For a side by side comparision, I have attached a zip of two journalctl
logs, a normal good shutdown and a faulty shutdown that needed a laptop
hard power down.
