Public bug reported: [os]: Ubuntu25.10 [Package]: libgtk-4-1 (version:4.20.1+ds-2) [Software]: gnome-text-editor
My office has about 7-8 printers that support the IPP protocol. I tried out gnome-text-editor on Ubuntu 25.10 and attempted to print a document, and I had a terrible experience. Let me illustrate my experience by comparing gnome-text-editor and gedit. gedit links against libgtk-3.so.1 gnome-text-editor links against libgtk-4.so.1 <Action1>: Waiting time for the print dialog box to pop up after pressing Ctrl+P gedit:moment gnome-text-editor:43 seconds (It was so long that at the first times I wondered if I had pressed Ctrl+P.) <Action2>: Switch printers in the print dialog gedit:smooth gnome-text-editor: After switching between multiple printers, the print dialog box becomes unresponsive. <Action3>:Selectable features for a printer gedit:All features recorded in the ppd file gnome-text-editor: Few At first, I thought it was a libgtk4 issue, so I reported the issue to gnome/gtkļ¼ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/7896 However, based on feedback from gnome/gtk, this issue only occurs on Ubuntu, because Ubuntu enables cpdb when compiling libgtk-4. Then I checked the libgtk4 rule file and found the following record: ------ ifeq ($(call dpkg_vendor_derives_from_v1,ubuntu),yes) configure_flags_deb += -Dprint-cpdb=enabled configure_flags_deb += -Dprint-cups=disabled local_recommends += 'cpdb-backend-cups (>= 2.0~b5)', else configure_flags_deb += -Dprint-cpdb=disabled configure_flags_deb += -Dprint-cups=enabled endif ------ Hope you can understand the confusion and anxiety faced by users who frequently need to print. Please reply me if more further information is needed.
