Public bug reported:
After updating CUPS on Linux Mint 22.1 (based on Ubuntu 24.04), the CUPS
scheduler failed to start after upgrading to version 2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.7.
The update incorrectly appended four directives at the end of
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf:
JobPrivateAccess default
JobPrivateValues default
SubscriptionPrivateAccess default
SubscriptionPrivateValues default
These directives already exist inside a <Policy default> block earlier
in the file. Their duplication at the top-level of the configuration
makes cupsd fail silently on startup.
No error is logged. Systemd reports only:
cupsd.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Manually removing or commenting out these four appended lines restores
normal operation immediately.
This did not occur with the previous version of the package
(2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.6). The issue appears during the configuration merge
of the updated package.
System details:
- OS: Linux Mint 22.1 (Cinnamon), based on Ubuntu 24.04
- Kernel: 6.8.0-48-generic
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (8 cores)
- RAM: 32 GB
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti
- Printing system: TurboPrint installed (this modifies /etc/cups/cupsd.conf but
was stable before the update)
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install a system where /etc/cups/cupsd.conf has previously been customized
(e.g., TurboPrint or minor edits).
2. Update cups packages to:
- cups 2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.7
- cups-daemon 2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.7
- libcups2 2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.7
3. After update, restart cupsd:
systemctl restart cups
4. cupsd fails to start, exits with status=1, and logs no errors.
5. Inspect /etc/cups/cupsd.conf: four invalid directives have been appended at
the end of the file.
Expected behavior:
- CUPS should start normally after update.
- No invalid directives should be appended during config merge.
Actual result:
- CUPS fails to start.
- Invalid duplicated directives added to cupsd.conf.
Workaround:
- Comment out or delete the four appended lines at the end of
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
