Thank you for your bug report. That's not a bug in the package though,
it does its job. If you want a version newer/different than the one
supported by Ubuntu then use one of the workarounds you listed.
Typically doing a local installation to /usr/local instead of
overwritting the Ubuntu binary would be the right way to handle that
