Public bug reported:
Every now and again, after resuming my system from suspend, I find that
the screen remains blank and that I cannot switch to a virtual console
because the mouse and keyboard appear to be dead. To get my system back
to a functional state, I need to reboot.
As I went over my journal log just now to see what might be the cause. I found
this:
Dec 07 11:41:23 Dapple (udev-worker)[39411]: vtcon1: Spawned process
'/etc/console-setup/cached_setup_font.sh' [39426] is taking longer than 59s to
complete.
Dec 07 11:41:23 Dapple systemd-udevd[432]: vtcon1: Worker [39411] processing
SEQNUM=6016 is taking a long time
Those are the last messages that got logged, even though I left the
system running for several minutes before rebooting. I saw these same
messages the previous times that my system failed to resume fully. The
behaviour appears to be random, though, as resuming will work fine any
number of times and then it will strike out of the blue. Some sort of
race condition?
For what it is worth, I use systemd scripts to automatically stop gnome-
shell before suspending and to start it again after resuming. I have to
do this because wayland and my nvidia driver appear to be incompatible
to the point of making suspending impossible. I do not know whether that
might be relevant but it is a fact that the issue only started occurring
after I introduced this automated start-stop routine.
