You need a version number for both, "old" and "new", i.e. you need both,
v1 and v2.  In case you need another similar fix, that becomes v3, and
your VMs started on your current machine type then become migratable for
the -v2 machine types.  Please see comment numbers #4 and #7 for
details; but you can't do without both v1 and v2.  Here's a thought
exercise - how do you ensure you can always start a machine with the
current (buggy, but backcompat) behaviour, and also with newer (non-
buggy, but non-compat behaviour)?  Then, add yet another bugfix that
necessitates bugfix and a v3, and repeat the exercise.
