I think Simon didn't want to be too aggressive when he wrote (one of the 
selection from the template) "...he package dav1d will not generally be useful 
for a large part of
  our user base...".
I already leveled that up with my analysis.
You just double down on that which is a helpful statement - thanks.

And - thanks again - furthermore you made us aware of the split
decoder/encoder preference. You are right on that aspect, let me reduce
the (already non-blocking), request to demote AOM with that in mind.

P.S. and yes, being already in main then is one less blocker for
integrations like in gstreamer.
