Peter, I only installed the binary because I was unable to re-install the snap, owing to this problem. Once the bug had been fixed I went back to the snap installation and removed the binary, by deleting the files on my disc.
I'm not sure which distro you are running, but in K(U)buntu, I simply opened Discover and chose the Thunderbird instance labelled 'snap'.
