In recent versions of Ubuntu (24.10 and later) less allows one to hit
Ctrl+X to make less leave the "follow forever" mode. With older versions
you can still Ctrl+C and then quit with q, but instead of leaving it
moves that job to the background, which may or may not be acceptable.

Given the existing behaviour is consolidated, I suspect distro-patching
and SRU'ing that behaviour is not an option.
