While I am not using Ubuntu, I have the same device and the hint by
@dtl131 brought the solution for me — the patch he linked seems to be
only for the 0CCC SKU, while the Area 51 18 seems to be the 0CCD SKU.

Using the following quirk:

 options snd_soc_sof_sdw quirk=0x8000

fixes things for me (that's a bitmask setting bit 15 as can be found by
checking the code). You can put that in a modprobe conf file or to just
try it temporarily do:

 modprobe -r snd_soc_sof_sdw
 modprobe snd_soc_sof_sdw quirk=0x8000

For an upstream (and hence, out of the box) fix, this should of course
be added to the kernel list of quirks. I can look into proposing this
(in case nobody else does), it will take me a while as I have just got
the device and still have to set up everything else.
