Based on the symptoms you described, this may not be an issue with the
kernel but rather mutter. You could try another compositor and see if
the issue is resolved, which should narrow it down.

The mutter buglink you provided does look pretty similar to your case,
same hardware, same error message, also involving an external display.
I'm going to mark this bug invalid for the linux kernel for now, if you
can reproduce the issue with other compositors then please upload debug
information to this report by running `apport-collect 2137256` after the
problem has occurred and we can take another look at it. If you find
that the issue is specific to mutter, I'd invite you to
watch/participate in the discussion on that upstream bug you linked.
